for everyone
scripture should be reachable by everyone.
without sight. without a mouse. without fine motor precision. here is how undertext keeps the word within reach — and where to write if it ever falls short.
seeing the text
- text scales to 200%. a reader text-size control runs up to twice the default. on iphone it follows your system Dynamic Type setting, so if you already read at an accessibility size, the verses arrive readable — you never have to find our slider.
- dark mode, automatically. the whole app follows your system light or dark appearance. no toggle to hunt for.
- high-contrast type. body and verse text clear a 7:1 contrast ratio (WCAG AAA) against every surface, in both light and dark.
moving through it
- full keyboard control. arrow keys turn the verse, the slash key or ⌘K opens search, and the escape key closes whatever is open. a "skip to content" link is the first thing the keyboard reaches.
- visible focus. a clear focus ring follows the keyboard so you always know where you are.
- generous touch targets. every button and link offers at least a 44×44 point hit area (WCAG 2.5.5 AAA), even where the glyph itself is small.
hearing it
- VoiceOver and screen readers. panels announce themselves as dialogs, decorative arrows are hidden from the reader, outbound links carry plain-spoken labels, and new search results and replies are announced quietly as they arrive.
- spoken pronunciation. the lexicon card speaks each hebrew or greek word aloud through your device's built-in voice; aramaic words play a short recording.
calming it
- reduced motion is honored. if your system asks for less motion, animations settle into quiet fades — nothing slides, pulses, or breathes against your wishes.
- no feed, no flashing, no autoplay. the reader holds one verse at a time. nothing moves unless you move it.
if something is unreachable
accessibility is never finished. if any part of undertext is hard to read, hear, or reach — with a screen reader, a switch, a keyboard, or anything else — i want to know. write to support@undertext.org and tell me your device, your assistive setup, and what got in the way. i answer within two days, usually sooner.
